Mutual fund: 1) Outside the United States, a generic term for any commingled investment fund. 2) In the United States, a commingled investment vehicle registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and constitued as a corporation or trust. The Investment Company Act of 1940 established three types of registered investment companies: open-ended funds, unit investment trusts and closed-ended funds.
